Overview
Telperest ("tel"=two, "per"=river, "est"=city)
straddles both the junction of two sizable rivers and the
cliff that one of them descends on its departure from its
hanging valley. The larger river flows from the north
into an oxbow which is slowly eating its way southeast
into the mountains; the smaller river descends through a
hanging valley which opens above the outer edge of the
larger river's curve. There the smaller river falls
approx. 125 feet into the larger river. The "lower city"
(literally, "surest", "soor-est") sits on the gentle
slope of the inside of the oxbow. Just south of the falls
a large road crosses the river on a very large stone
bridge, where it enters the cliff face opposite and
climbs to Krest ("upper city") through a large helical
cave.
The caves within the cliff are extensive, as the road
merely uses an augmented passage through part of the
subterranean network. Obviously, there are Places and
Things unknown or forgotten in the deeper recesses of the
caverns (which don't yet have a name). There is a
fortress set into the top of the cliff, back a bit on the
southern side of the smaller river. The road can be
closed from below with a strong defense of the bridge and
the caves; Kr'est is defended as a plain city would be by
the keep/fortress. The keep is nearly impossible to lay
siege to because of the many entrances and exits through
the tunnels as well as above ground. There is another
smaller road which crosses the river considerably to the
north of the falls, where the cliffs to the southeast are
not so high. This is at the very northern edge of Surest,
and on the Kr'est side of the river it bends south and
parallels the river through sparse population before
reaching the much smaller and denser Kr'est. The road
stays on the northern side of the river on either side of
Telperest until the ford about ten miles northeast of
Fenneldale.

Please note that this map is approx. 1/3 done...
very much a work-in-progress.
